At Eastwood Dental Office, we realize that, with August already upon us, back to school routines are the new normal for families all over New York.

Our Syracuse-based dental team knows how chaotic this time of year can be. Still, we want you to keep oral health top of mind.

As a parent, like it or not, you have a big responsibility to set a good example and establish high expectations for your children. So, if things have gotten lax or outright crazy in regards to oral hygiene habits over the summer, now is the time to rein it back in.

In an effort to make oral health practices easier for families in our area, we have come up with a few easily taught tips and explanations that should make good sense no matter what your age is.

Keep reading and then be sure to follow up to schedule your next preventive appointment with Dr. Laura!

Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day

For brushing to be fully effective, it is very important to brush for at least two minutes when you do engage in this activity. But brushing is only the beginning!

Dental Floss Is Just As Important As A Toothbrush

We’ve established that daily brushing is non-negotiable. But did you know that this exercise, even when done correctly, only reaches a fraction of your teeth’s surface area?

The truth is, you will only ever be able to reach certain areas of your mouth with dental floss.

Flossing is one of the only ways you can hope to remove plaque from the often overlooked regions in between your teeth.

While your kids are young, instill flossing as a healthy habit that they will want to carry with them as they grow. It is better than fillings, root canals, and extractions later in life!

Come To See Us Twice A Year

Stopping by regularly for professional teeth cleanings will make it much easier for us (and for you) to repulse plaque and tartar from your teeth and keep any disease and decay at bay.

During your comprehensive dental exam with Dr. Laura, you will be screened for gum disease, oral cancer, and other issues that could be affecting your overall health and wellness. Depending on your situation, we might recommend extra protection like dental sealants or fluoride treatments while you are here.

Rest assured, we want nothing more than to keep you on the good road. But in order to do that, we have to see you often enough to be in-tune with your ever-changing needs.

Teach Them Well

We trust that you will take your family’s oral health as seriously as we do. A healthy mouth and a great-looking smile will be important as life goes on.

For now, the burden is on you to teach your children good habits through your own rigorous example.

Teach them how to brush and to floss. But also teach them how to find a dentist that they can trust so that they will never be alone in their efforts to lead a healthy, happy life.
