FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are drugstore whitening kits just as good as professional whitening?
In a word, no. Whitening kits bought over the counter contain lower concentrations of bleaching gel, so you may be disappointed with your results. Professional whitening supervised by a dentist, is safer, faster, and more effective. Your dentist is familiar with your specific needs, the sensitivity of your teeth, and whether whitening will give you the brightness you are looking for. Depending on the condition of your teeth, Dr. Laura can adjust the concentration of the whitening gel and take precautions to reduce the sensitivity of your teeth and gums throughout the process. If whitening is not a good option for the look you want, she can recommend other solutions to get you a brighter smile!

Q: Why are crowns important? Are they just a cosmetic option?
Dental crowns, also called caps, serve multiple purposes. Crowns completely cover the visible portion of the tooth at and above the gum line. They provide strength and a better appearance to a tooth that has been damaged in some way. A crown is often used to cover a tooth that has cracked, has a large filling, or has undergone a root canal. Though crowns are sometimes used for cosmetic reasons to hide imperfections or discolorations, they also protect the tooth. They can prevent you from losing your tooth by preventing the tooth from breaking. If Dr. Laura recommends crowns for your teeth, she intends to prevent future problems that can cause you to lose your teeth.

Q: What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic procedure that involve placing a thin porcelain shell on top of your existing tooth. They are great for correcting minor cosmetic flaws. They can last for years with proper maintenance. We secure our veneers with a strong polymer resin which sets almost instantly, so you are immediately free to eat, drink, and brush normally!

Q: What should I do if one of my teeth is knocked out?
Pick up the tooth or pieces of the tooth, making sure not to touch the root, and place it in a small container of milk or saliva. Apply pressure inside your mouth with gauze to stop the bleeding. Call Eastwood Dental Office and we will see you right away!

Q: What is the best toothbrush to use?
It is very important to choose a toothbrush that has a head that will comfortably fit in your mouth and reach every tooth surface, even behind the back teeth. The purpose of a toothbrush is to remove sticky plaque from the teeth, so a soft bristled brush works just fine and is gentler on your gums. If you have tartar buildup, schedule an appointment for a professional cleaning.
